Why is my skin breaking out after changing skincare?Updated a month ago

When introducing a new routine. especially one that includes active ingredients, it’s possible for skin to feel unsettled before it stabilises.

This does not automatically mean the products don’t suit you.

Skin is dynamic and can react to change, even when formulas are gentle and well tolerated.

Hormonal Skin Is Not Teenage Acne

Hormonal skin (particularly 40+) behaves very differently from teenage acne.

It is often:

• Breakout-prone
• Thinner and more fragile
• More reactive
• Slower to recover

Treating congestion too aggressively can disrupt the skin barrier, which may increase inflammation rather than calm it.

Barrier Overload vs “Allergic Reaction”

If you notice:

• Breakouts spreading
• Increased redness
• Dryness or tightness at the same time

This usually indicates barrier stress rather than a true allergy or incompatibility.

When the skin barrier is overwhelmed, even gentle products can suddenly feel like “too much.”

Actives Need Slow Introduction

Products containing:

• Bio-retinol / Bakuchiol
• Vitamin C derivatives
• Peptides
• Exfoliating or resurfacing ingredients

should always be introduced gradually.

We recommend starting 1–2 nights per week and increasing slowly once skin feels stable — not nightly from the beginning.

Seasonal Factors Matter

Skin is more vulnerable during:

• Cold weather
• Indoor heating
• Lower humidity
• Periods of hormonal fluctuation

December–February in particular can be peak barrier stress season.

Sometimes timing, rather than formula, is the trigger.

What To Do If This Happens

If your skin feels unsettled:

• Pause active products
• Simplify to a gentle cleanse + moisturiser
• Allow skin to stabilise for 2–3 weeks
• Reintroduce actives slowly

Often, less is more during this phase.

When It’s Truly Not For You

If you experience:

• Persistent itching
• Swelling
• Hives
• Ongoing irritation even after simplifying

Discontinue use and contact us for guidance.

We’re always happy to help adjust your routine. Skin changes, and your skincare should adapt with it.
